The coronavirus pandemic has impacted our day-to-day lives in a multitude of ways, one of them being education. This leaves those who are hoping for normalcy for this upcoming school year quite disappointed as schools frantically adjust to online classes, preparing to safely reopen when the right time comes. Although out of the chaos one thing is for certain: going to school won’t be the same.

Some school boards and districts are still discussing what the best option is for this upcoming school year. The focal point: keeping students safe and somehow satisfying everyone’s needs—including parent’s jobs, special ed students, etc.. The schools deciding on in-class learning are implementing new guidelines, such as making students stay in one class the entire day, or having them sit six feet apart at lunch. On the other hand, schools that are agreeing to use at-home learning are quickly trying to adapt their curriculums to be more Zoom-friendly.

Both in-class and at-home learning have their own set of pros and cons. For instance, some students thrive in the social and collaborative environment of a classroom. With classroom learning, the physical setting of a classroom can keep students more stimulated and it’s easier to cater to different learning styles . However, classroom learning puts teachers and students at a huge risk of catching COVID-19. Remote learning puts that certain worry at ease. Other than decreasing the cases of coronavirus, online schooling holds many benefits for students as it is more convenient and can be done from the comfort of their own home. This could influence students to feel more inclined to ask questions in virtual discussions since they won’t have the eyes of their peers staring at them.

Online tutoring, in general, is beneficial for any student because of its accessibility and flexibility. Being able to adjust sessions around their own schedule is an excellent advantage. Moreover, students can work at a pace more comfortable for them. Instead of having to go along with a teacher’s classroom schedule, they’re free to take as much time as they want to solidify their understanding.

All in all, this upcoming school year will present many obstacles and challenges. Nevertheless, safety and education should be among our top priorities. With online learning and safe COVID practices, we’ll be able to achieve just that.
