As we venture further into the 21st century, female empowerment grows more relevant within each corner of the world. Everyday there are organizations and movements aiming to ensure education and equality for women. A brilliant example of a group taking the initiative is PowHER Up.

PowHER Up is a student led non-profit that aims to supply necessities for a quality STEM education while empowering other women. The four founders realized during their studies that their education system never catered for their hygienic needs nor did they aim to motivate them.

They wanted to provide for girls what they felt should already be provided for all females.

Founded in July 2020, they’ve started working towards these goals through an informative blog and a Big Sisters tutoring program. At the moment, however, their main goal is to grow their platform and reach a greater audience. In the long run they hope to expand nationally and have a bigger impact within other communities and schools. Some limitations that stand in the way of these goals include the ongoing pandemic and their small platform. They plan on overcoming these challenges by adapting online and interacting with other student led organizations. As of thus far, they are incredibly excited about their future as an organization. Though they can’t implement these ideas just yet, PowHER Up is planning hygiene drives, STEM classes, and even fundraisers!

Owning a non-profit taught the founders many lessons—most importantly, they learned that this project ultimately takes a lot more effort than what they initially thought. When they started, they assumed everything would fall in place, but it was a bit more difficult than that. To any new organizations, they advise that you have a clear vision or else you’ll keep having to reorient yourself and your mission. They also advise to have a passion for what you’re doing. This isn’t just college application padding—it’s someone’s wellbeing.

You never know whose life you can change.

To get involved with this incredible organization, you can apply to be a tutor for their program and stay updated with their blog. To learn more about PowHER Up check out their website and Instagram linked below.
